Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is spray tanning?
A: Spray tanning, often called airbrush tanning or sunless
tanning, is a process by which a DHA-based solution is sprayed onto the skin
via an automated booth system, or by a certified spray tanning technician using
spray tanning equipment. When the tanning
solution is sprayed onto the skin, a safe, natural looking, sunless tan
develops and lasts for approximately 4-10 days.
The length of time that a spray tan will last depends on how the sunless
tan is cared for.
Q: When will I see results?
A: With most solutions, the deepest tan color result is reached
in approximately 8 – 12 hours. Spray
tanning solutions typically have a bronzer which provides an immediate tan
effect. The bronzer has two purposes.
First, the instant color helps ensure even coverage of your tanning solution by
your tanning technician. Secondly, the
immediate bronzer gives you a beautiful tan instantly, which could be important
for special events. The instant color
will only be present on your skin until you take your first shower. The bronzer will come off during your first
shower after your spray tanning appointment.
It is perfectly normal to see the color washing down the drain, so don’t
be alarmed. Once the color washes off,
you will see your sunless tanning color results. The
color that remains is the color that is produced by the DHA reacting with the
skin. This is the color that your skin
will remain for the next 4-10 days.
Please be aware that the color of the bronzer, and the color of your
final spray tanning results may be different, and this is totally normal. Remember that everyone tans in the sun
differently, and spray tanning is no different.
Your color results will be unique to your skin tone and body
chemistry. Spray tanning is just like
any other beauty service. Very rarely
are your results 100% perfect on the first try.
When you are getting used to a new hair stylist, make up artist, or nail
technician, it usually takes about 2-3 visits for your beauty professional to
really know what kind of results that you are after, and to be able to
customize your beauty service to deliver those results to you on a consistent
basis. Work with your spray tanning
professional to find the tan color results that are perfect for you. Once he or she figures out what products to
use on your skin type, you have guaranteed yourself a year round, natural
looking sunless tan that works for you and your lifestyle. Spray tanning has become the dominant tanning
choice for anyone who wants a regular healthy tan without the harmful effects
of the sun.
Q: How long will the "typical" spray tan last?
A: A spray tan fades just like a tan from the sun, depending upon your skin’s rate of exfoliation, lifestyle, and whether or not you use professional products to maintain your sunless tanning results. A “typical” spray tan will last anywhere from 4-10 days. There are many products available to extend the life of your spray tan from DHA-friendly body wash all the way to lotions that include a small amount of DHA to extend your sunless tanning results. When used as directed, these professional maintenance tools can guarantee you much more attractive sunless tanning results between appointments. Again, it is very similar to any other beauty service, where you get out of it what you put into it. If you have your hair highlighted, but don’t use professional products to wash and style your hair, your color results will not be as attractive or as long lasting as if you do use professional products. Spray tanning is exactly the same. Ask your certified spray tanning professional what products that he or she recommends so that you can properly manage your sunless tan between appointments.
Q: What products can I use to make my spray tan last longer?
A: I absolutely recommend that before you leave your spray tan session that you purchase a color extending moisturizer. Amber Sun Pro-Long by Norvell, only available to salons, is a daily moisturizer with a hint of sunless color to build and extend your golden glow. You can purchase a sample cup for $5 or a full tube (8.5 fl oz) for $15. Don't forget to ask for this amazing product!
Q: How do I prepare my skin before the spray tan?
A: For the best results, your skin should be clean and free of moisturizers, perfumes, body oils, make up, sweat, etc. All of these things will create a barrier between the tanning solution and your skin. You need to start with a clean canvas for your spray tanning professional to work with.
There are many exfoliating scrubs available that are designed specifically for spray tanning, which will not leave heavy oils or chemicals on your skin. You should give your skin a good exfoliation at least 24 hours before your sunless tanning session. If you need to shave, please also take care of this 24 hours in advance, as the moisturizing strip on the razor can leave a film on the skin as well as cause minor skin irritations that will not contribute to your overall tanning experience.
Q: What should I wear?
A: You should wear dark colored, loose fitting clothing to the tanning session. Do not wear things that are tight or heavy and will leave marks on your skin after you get dressed. Try either a black dress or a t-shirt and darker colored sweats to guarantee the best results. You will want to take a hair tie to tie your hair up so that it is not sitting on your neck. In warmer months, flip-flops or sandals are recommended rather that shoes and socks, to avoid leaving lines on your feet. You may choose to be spray tanned in your favorite swimsuit so that your tan lines are the same as the swimsuit that you wear. However, please be aware that sunless tanning solution could stain your suit permanently, especially if it is a light colored swimsuit. If you are spray tanning a dark swimsuit, then the color guard will wash out of the suit and not cause any permanent damage. Some clients choose to wear undergarments, such as underwear and/or bra, and some prefer to be sprayed nude. Ultimately, it depends on what you, the client, are comfortable with. Right before the spray you will apply a barrier balm to protect the tops of your hand and feet from overspray.
Q: When can I shower?
A: This rule is pretty hard and fast across all of the application methods. Allow 8 hours after your tanning session before showering. You should also make every effort to avoid contact with water during that time, and avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities, which can cause sweating. The best recommendation to you is to schedule your session in the evening, after you are done with work. This way you can simply go home and sleep while the DHA is fully developing overnight.
Q: How do I take care of my new spray tan?
A: After the first post-tan shower, apply moisturizer daily. Hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a longer lasting sunless tan. To maximize your results, you should use a tan extending lotion, drink plenty of water, and try to avoid contact with harsh chemicals that will strip the skin of its beautiful new color (Jacuzzi’s, nail polish remover, etc.) Spray tanning requires maintenance and product knowledge to understand how to make this sunless option work for you year round. You only have to figure it out once, and then you have a lifetime of beautifully tanned, healthy skin. Talk to your sunless tanning professional about the products that are right for you.
Q: Normally I freckle in the sun....will a spray tan cause freckles?
A: No. Spray tanning solutions will not cause more freckles. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become LESS obvious because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color difference between these areas and the rest of the skin.
Q: Will a spray tan cover up or harm my tattoos?
A: No. The solution will not harm tattoos, but if you have yellow or light tones, it can temporarily darken the color a bit, until your spray tan fades. If you do not want that to happen, just cover the tattoo lightly with moisturizing lotion BEFORE your spray tan.
Q: I am going on vacation. How can I minimize exfoliation from hot tubs, swimming pools and the ocean after I get a spray tan?
A: After your tan has developed and after your first post-tan shower, you can minimize water activity exfoliation by liberally and frequently applying a good, strong waterproof sunscreen before submersing yourself. This will help your tan from fading prematurely.
Q: Should I shave before or after the spray tan application?
A: Shaving is a form of exfoliation so you should shave about 8 hours before the application. After your application, be sure to use a new razor as old dull blades can lighten your tan faster.
Q: I love my spray tan just the way it is. How do I keep it?
A: Make sure you moisturize every day and have a maintenance tan every 5-7 days according to your liking.
Q: Can I get a spray tan if I am pregnant?
A: The tanning solution is non-toxic, and DHA, the active ingredient is FDA approved. With that said, I recommend checking with your ob-gyn to confirm that it is ok. Most ob-gyns recommend their patients to be through the 1st trimester before getting sprayed. I also provide nose plugs to wear during the spray just to play it safe. When speaking to your doctor, it should be mentioned that it is hand-sprayed with an extraction fan. I mention this because there are spray tan booths where the spray lingers in the air and can be inhaled more easily.
Q: If I get a spray tan, can I also tan in tanning beds and in the sun?
A: Yes. There is nothing in the tanning solution that would prevent you from tanning in tanning beds or in the sun. In fact, a number of customers have found that tanning with UV rays and spray tanning actually gives them a better overall tan. I personally do not advise UV tanning in any circumstances, for anyone, regardless of skin type. The very real health risks make this an unsafe alternative for everyone. I should know! But, with that said, If you do plan to use a tanning bed and get a spray tan in the same day, I recommend that you tan in the tanning bed first. Remember, however, spray tanning does not provide any protection from UV rays, so please wear sunscreen whenever you are exposed to sunlight.Q: Does my spray tan have to be completely gone before I get sprayed again?
A: No, it is fine to have spray tan left on your skin. It is, however, best to exfoliate and remove as much of the tan as possible the night before. Try this little trick when you want to remove your entire tan before your next session. First off, relax; grab a robe and some baby oil. Massage the oil into your skin and then wait at least 30-45 minutes for it to absorb into your skin. Slip into a bath for about 10 minutes, and then exfoliate with a wash cloth. It may take more than one visit to the tub, but this will likely get you where you need to be.Did you know....

that spraying perfume over your spray tan could strip it? Instead of spraying it directly on your skin, try spraying it on your clothes or hair when you are tanned. Applying perfume before a spray tan can also affect the results of a spray tan.
